Three Primary Programs Nourish Science and Engineering Careers
National Defense Education Program’s purpose is to foster a new generation of scientists, mathematicians, engineers and technologists who will one day discover and problem solve in the nation’s defense laboratories. With nearly 13,000 scientists and engineers expected to retire during the next decade, this national security effort is aimed a preserving American core competence in critical disciplines and maintaining U.S. technological superiority into the future.

The Department of Defense's new Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) scholarship program pays tuition and provides key internships.

Paying for college and gaining practical experience can be two of the biggest challenges for advancing one's education. SMART Fast Facts
  • NDEP is developing SMART-like programs to support students from community college to doctoral degree level.
  • For every year of supported study, SMART scholars serve one year as a paid employee at a laboratory owned by the sponsoring DoD organization.
  • The program is competitive and students are selected based on projected workforce critical skill needs.
  • The program is open to all U.S. citizens.
  • SMART is administered by the Naval Postgraduate School in cooperation with the American Society for Engineering Education.
