Community Snapshot |
SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic is commissioned for operation in Charleston, SC, Norfolk, VA, and New Orleans, LA. SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic works with the local school districts and institutions of higher education to implement programs and activities for students and teachers that will enrich their understanding of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic is currently working with three county school districts: Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester, as well as institutions of higher education such as, the Citadel. The three school districts service more than 93,000 students, with a diverse student population with over 136 school facilities including elementary, intermediate, middle, high, magnet, charter, and alternative schools. The Citadel services approximately 2,000 undergraduate students from 40 states and a dozen countries. |

Outreach Activities |
Coaches and mentors are provided to schools to support FLL/FRC/JFLLL teams for regional, state, and national championships.
First Lego League
Project Lead the Way (PLTW) prepares students to be the most innovative and productive leaders in STEM and to make meaningful, pioneering contributions to our world. PLTW partners with middle schools and high schools to provide a rigorous, relevant STEM education. Through an engaging, hands-on curriculum, PLTW encourages the development of problem-solving skills, critical thinking, creative and innovative reasoning, and a love of learning. The PLTW middle- and high-school STEM education programs give students a brighter future by providing them with a foundation and proven path to college and career success in STEM-related fields.
Project Lead the Way
Gussie Green is the first computer center of its kind to teach computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, web browsing, etc.) to low-income individuals in North Charleston. With partners such as SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic, engineers and other volunteers help keep the center operational. The center provides the community with resume assistance and other valuable technology skills to help with technology literacy, career advancement, and job placement.
The Lunch Buddy Program at Hanahan Middle School is a mentoring initiative that provides a child with an ongoing relationship with a caring adult. Adult volunteers commit to having lunch with a student once a month. The one-on-one relationships between buddies often make a profound difference in a child's life.
Lunch Buddy Program
MWM are hands-on, inquiry and design-based units for middle and high school students. Based on materials science and nanotechnology principles, this interdisciplinary approach engages students, adds relevance to traditional curriculum, and has been shown to improve science knowledge for all students.

Tabula Digita is an innovative and effective technology-based educational tool for elementary, middle and high school students that helps develop skills in pre-algebra and algebra.
Tabula Digita
The mission of the Math, Science, and Technology (MaST) program is to encourage middle and high school students to take math, science, and technology courses and to choose careers in those fields. The program will introduce teachers in the trident area to the latest technologies so they can channel their knowledge and enthusiasm to their students. Administrators will participate too since they provide resources for the teachers and facilitate their effort.
