Program Overview
|
The Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) is committed to energizing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in area schools by partnering scientists and engineers with teachers in classrooms and training academies/camps, by providing opportunities for professional development of science and math teachers, and by involving students in STEM-related activities.
To enhance STEM education in the central Florida area, NAWCTSD has partnered with Orange County Public Schools, Seminole County Public Schools, the University of Central Florida, the National Center for Simulation Education and Workforce Development Committee, and members of the Central Florida STEM Council and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council.

Outreach Activities
|
|
NAWCTSD provides mentors and job-shadowing opportunities for students attending partner schools. NAWCTSD also provides support for STEM-related events/activities at area schools. Examples of these events/activities are Teach-Ins, Science Fairs, Science Olympiad, MathCounts, and Educator Orientation/Visits. To request STEM-related support, contact a NAWCTSD NDEP coordinator.
NAWCTSD scientists and engineers mentor/coach middle-school FIRST Lego League teams and high-school FIRST Tech Challenge teams. Teams are formed in partner schools and participate in FIRST Robotics competitions. Information on FIRST Robotics may be found at http://www.usfirst.org/.
NAWCTSD provides employee-led tour guides for student tours at the annual Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC). I/ITSEC showcases the latest in training and modeling & simulation technologies. Tour guides are scientists, engineers, and program managers who share their knowledge and experience in M&S/Training System Development/Delivery. More information about I/ITSEC and student tours may be found at http://www.iitsec.org/.
Materials World Modules (MWM) are hands-on, inquiry- and design-based units for middle- and high-school students. MWM connects science and mathematics in the classroom to contemporary issues. NAWCTSD provides MWM kits and mentor support for teachers and students. More information about MWM may be found at http://www.materialsworldmodules.org/.
High-school students can get a head start on their career with the Navy by applying for the Office of Naval Research Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP), which offers a limited number of summer positions at NAWCTSD Orlando. The goals of SEAP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of Department of Navy (DoN) research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN. The annual application process, deadline, and other details may be found at http://seap.asee.org.
NAWCTSD provides a limited number of unpaid internships ranging from 40 to 70 hours in support of partner Science/Technology/Engineering magnet schools.
