I hold the Guinness Record for time aloft for paper airplanes, and am an engineer for the Air Force. Attached is a presentation I use and the pattern for my world record airplane (OK to copy for schools, but need my publishers permission to publish).

How do I get copies of the modules for Inquiry Based Science & Technology Program for our school:
Biodegradable Materials
Biosensors
Ceramics
Composites
Concrete: An infrastructure Material
Food Packaging
Polymers
Smart Sensors
Sports Materials.

I was lucky enough to get one copy of Sports Material from the ASEE K-12 Conference, and would like to get a complete set for curriculum integration.

Can you help me with how to do that?

John Yochelson gave an excellent presentation about NDEP K-12's national partnership initiatives. John's brief, titled "Leveraging National Partnerships," provided new participants with information on the organizations that NDEP PEP is currently partnering with at a national level and how program particiapants at the local level might be able to benefit from the contributions and STEM academic learning products being developed by these national K-12 STEM education leaders. John's presentation also exceeds the file size limit (5242 Kb) of this forum right now. Send me an e-mail (robert.mcgahern@osd.mil) if you'd like this presentation while we work the forum size limitation issue.

Dr. Jim Rohr, our NDEP lead for SPAWAR Systems Center in San Diego, gave an excellent K-12 presentation on being an engineer. This presentation is slowly being refined for wide-spread use during National Engineers Week. Jim would love feedback from anyone who looks over or uses the presentation. The presentation itself is large (~16.6M) and so is too large for uploading to this forum at this time. It may be too large for some e-mail in-boxes. We'll, at a minimum, make sure to include it on the CD of conference materials we mail out to participants. In the meantime, if you want a copy of the presentation contact Cheryl Hedeen, myself or Jim directly. We'll burn a CD and send it to you.

topic: K-12 (and beyond) Framework or Plan

K-12 Program Framework

• It seems to me that we need a structure or framework for our K-12 efforts to help folks organize their programs. I also believe such a structure would allow NDEP and all involved to provide information on what certain efforts should do/seek to accomplish in their efforts. Further this would allow NDEP to see how all the various programs are focused and help them in their reporting efforts on these efforts. It would also allow new organizations getting involved to see where their help is needed and where their efforts and dollars can be focused.

• Here is my Straw man Framework for discussion:

o We need to have programs that target all student, ages K-12 and beyond.
o Many studies show that kids, particularly girls, have decided by the 4th grade they aren’t interested so we are losing them early in the pipeline, even before most of our collective efforts seek to get them engaged.

o I suggest a 5E approach to this structure:

 K-4: Entice
 5-8: Educate
 9-12: Enhance
 College: Enable
 Beyond: Employ

o K-4: Entice

 Outreach programs designed to show kids that STEM stuff is “cool”
 Programs in this area aren’t really trying to provide detailed education but really seeking to show kids that this stuff
is fun and engaging and that it is worth it to work, study, and stay engaged.
 The earlier we show them it is interesting and worth it to stay involved, the better these programs would serve that
purpose.

o 5- 8: Educate

 Programs in this area are seeking to help kids learn and to improve curriculum.
 We want students to actively learn and progress in a manner that provides them the basics so they can continue in
STEM disciplines.
 Of course we also want to continue showing them it is worth it and where this path can lead.
 We also want them to be more aware of paths to success in their education, career possibilities, and the courses
they should take to be competitive and successful.

o 9-12: Enhance

 While we would continue to improve education and curriculum in this area, here we want to help the students who
are interested and engaged become even more aware of programs and careers.
 Competitions would be provided to encourage students to stay engaged and to have fun learning and growing in their
skills and abilities.
 Internships and other such programs would also enhance their education and make them more competitive for
programs beyond high school.
 We would also seek to continue informing on possible career paths and to make students aware of scholarship
opportunities to help them succeed.

o College: Enable – Here scholarships and internships enable students to complete their college programs and
succeed in joining the STEM capabilities team for the nation.

o Beyond: Employ – Pretty self-explanatory

• Obviously I claim no vast expertise to suggest this is what the framework should be, but offer it as a useful starting point. Also, much needs to be added and fleshed out. Once we have agreement/consensus on a framework we would then develop detailed goals and objectives for each portion of it.

• Benefits:

o Such a framework would allow all DoD organizations to list where their programs are targeted and fit within the
framework.
o This allows us to show, in a cohesive fashion, how we are addressing this challenge.
o NDEP would have a built-in framework they could use to brief ‘Higher” and Congress on how the challenge is being
addressed. When programs are listed, their organization and briefing falls out.
o All organizations seeking to be involved in this area, particularly new organizations could see where programs are
lacking in their sphere of influence. This would allow us all to target our resources at those areas most needing such
efforts. Again, this would be particularly useful to those getting started in their efforts.
o By having agreed upon goals and objectives for each level of the framework all, again particularly those seeking to
become involved, have a built-in planning mechanism for their efforts to target what is needed where.

Okay that is it for the start. I would think we could do much of this via this Forum and then perhaps have a meeting to finalize and present the framework for approval and implementation. Thoughts?

topic: Ways to use LabTV in the classroom

I would appreciate hearing from site coordinators about their experiences using LabTV webisodes in the classroom. Specifically:
- How do you select which webisode to show?
- What kind of feedback have you received from teachers?
- What kind of feedback have you received from students?
- Do you always play a webisode when you visit the classroom? Why or why not?
